The values Hayden built the company on shape every program we run.
Where this leads
Born
Hayden Jon Brown, Gold Coast local from the start.
Years before a diagnosis
Bullying from people who didn't understand his disability. Hayden didn't have a diagnosis yet, and neither did they. The hard part wasn't the symptoms. The hard part was not knowing they had names, and not knowing anyone who could help him work with them instead of against them.
The high-risk window
Long-term unemployment. Loneliness. The combination most disability advocates name as the highest-risk period for young people with undiagnosed ASD and ADHD. Years of feeling like he was running someone else's race with no idea why he kept losing.
The diagnoses
ASD and ADHD, late. The first time the symptoms had names. The first time the path forward had structure.
The job that became the work
Hayden's first Disability Support Worker role. Two things happened at once: he realised he was good at it, and he realised the industry had patterns that needed to change. Parents were getting talked at, not talked with. People were being handed NDIS plans they couldn't read. The connection-to-community piece, the one that turned out to be the difference between coping and thriving, was missing from how most providers spoke about the work. So he started building it differently.
GCDAY founded
GCDAY launched with a specific gap in mind: high-functioning teens and young adults on the spectrum who weren't getting the kind of support that actually fit them. Hayden built the company around the lived experience he'd already walked through, and around what he'd watched too many families try to navigate alone. The vision was straightforward. Match support workers to clients by interest, not paperwork. Treat parents as part of the team. And keep the support practical enough that participants could feel themselves getting more independent week by week.
The DAY Group expands
GCDAY, DAYC, DAYS, and CHOICE all under Hayden's directorship. Each entity covers a different piece of the support, advocacy, and employment pathway, with Hayden as Director across the whole group.
Still in the work
Hayden's greatest reward is the same one he had on his first shift: watching clients hit goals they didn't think were available to them, because the right support was finally in the room. Late diagnosis, long unemployment, school years he wouldn't want anyone else to repeat. All of that became the muscle this company runs on. The work isn't finished. It probably won't be. But the path he wished someone had walked him down is now one GCDAY walks down with the people who need it.
